|The boys eating out with Grandpa|
Over at Multiples and More this is the featured question of the week: How do you handle taking your multiples out to restaurants? I thought this would be a fun subject to talk about especially since taking kids out in general can be challenging to any parent whether you have multiples or not.
How often do you take your children out to eat, and how old are they?
Well I wish I could say we ate out with them more often but right now it might be 1 to 2 times per month.
The boys are 15 months old so their patience runs short when it comes to sitting in high chairs AND their volume level seems to increase to the point of mom getting embarrassed- dad could care less.
Do you have any tricks for keeping them entertained? Besides making sure they have the basics…you know food, snacks, favorite toys. We also have one of the things(should all else fail) that keeps them entertained for a while…restaraunt napkins! They love to tear up the napkin in little pieces. It really keeps them focused for 5 to 10 minutes. Hey that’s pretty good cause it gives mom and dad a chance to scarf down their food before all anarchy breaks out!
Which restaurants do you find are the most family-friendly? Fast food places…We love going to Chick Fil A. There’s always kids there and it’s ok (it seems) for kids to get loud. Plus there’s always fun family stuff that goes on there on Tuesdays. McDonald’s is great cause then we let the boys run around in the playland area. They’re too little to go in the play structure but they just love to walk all over the place.
But actual restaraunts we have gone to Red Robin and it’s always really loud there…you can tell I’m concerned about how loud my boys can get.
How do you handle tantrums in restaurants? Not well. I’m always overly concerned about what others are thinking so my husband helps me to relax about the boys behavior. Usually they don’t really overly act out but when it has happened we just talk to them and pick them up to call them down. Usually if mom or dad picks them up it helps calm them down, but there have been occassions that we just have to leave the restaraunt.
Do you ever venture out to restaurants without having extra adults to help out? I’ll take the boys to McDonalds by myself and just grab a sweet tea and them let them walk all over in the playland area.
Do you think it’s better to take your kids out to restaurants, and get them used to the experience, or refrain from eating out until they are old enough to understand the right way to behave? I think they need to experience being out in restaraunts. How else are they going to learn how to behave out and about?
Be honest- do you pick up the cheerios? YES! We really do. My husband was a server at Applebees for a while so he has a heart for those who have to clean up after messy families. We always make the effort to clean up after our boys.
It was so much easier to me taking they boys out when they were infants. They would just sleep and sleep and need a bottle now and then. My husband and I could just sit in the restaraunt and relax. But now….there’s no relaxing. Will we stop going out? Naw! Like my hubby says, the boys need to learn to adjust! There might be crying and tantrums but eventually they’ll adjust…RIGHT????
