It seems like moms seem to get more hoopla & praise over Mother’s Day, doesn’t it? I think it’s cause dad’s are so much more low-key about celebrations. I don’t think most dad’s need too much fussing over to feel honored on Father’s Day. I just want to take a moment on this blog to say what a great dad I have. All my life He’s been a source of love, acceptance, encouragment, and discipline (don’t like this one).
My earliest memories of my dad being a source of comfort and love is when I was around 9 or 10 years old. I had a really bad day at school with this girl who was always trying to put me down and very bossy toward me. My dad had picked me up from school and we stopped at a nearby grocery store to pick up somethings for mom on the way home. Dad could tell something was bothering me just by my demeanor. He asked right there in the middle of the grocery aisle what was wrong. Tears immediately started to stream down my face as I told him what had happened to me earlier that day and how I was hurt by what was said. I could see my dad’s concern for me written all over his face. My dad hugged me, told me I wasn’t all those things that were spoken over me and told me how wonderful and beautiful I was to him. I’ll never forget that. That immediate removal of the ugly things that were said and my dad’s immediate pronouncement of my beauty and worth melted my heart. I am so glad that I have that memory of my dad’s love for me.
You know the way my dad showed love & concern toward me is just a tiny snippet of the way our Heavenly Father loves us & cares for us. Sometimes people want to throw arrows in our soul and wound us but there’s a Heavely Father who wants to gently take out that arrow of hurt & negativity and replace it with His love, acceptance and affirmation.
I am blessed this Father’s Day…blessed with my dad and his example of love towards me and the real and lifechanging love of my Heavely Father.
P.S. The pic above is of my mom & dad on their 65th wedding anniversary.
