What is Hope? In the past I have viewed hope as hanging on to a thread of possibility that something good could happen for me. When someone asks us about our lives or the future we sometimes answer with: “well, I’m hoping for….” or ” I hope to…if God wills.”
But there is another view of what HOPE means for us as Christians: HOPE for us as Christians is “a confident expectation.”
I have to admit,I’m have not always had a confident expectation about things in my life. Maybe it’s because I don’t want to be disappointed, so I set my expectations low. In my mind, setting low expectations somehow prepares me for uncertain outcomes.
It’s crazy but this has been true in my life. Even when I was pregnant with the boys, I was sure not to get too excited about it at first. I just knew that it could be a false alarm or that maybe the pregnancy wouldn’t go full term. Each time I would have an ultrasound, I came away feeling like “phew, we’re ok for now.”
This last year and a half, we have been asking God for a breakthrough for our little family. A full-time job for my husband. We started praying that prayer in August of 2008 and never thought it would have taken this long to see it come to reality.
I believe that God has used this waiting time to cause us to truly TRUST Him for our lives, to cause us to reevaulate the way we have lived financially and to press us to make changes in our attitudes and in our lifestyle.
For me to truly HOPE in God, I have had to TRUST His character and the nature of WHO He says He is. Over and over I have been reminded through reading God’s word that He is our FATHER. He is the ultimate example of a Good Father. Put aside all negative examples from your experience….God our FATHER LOVES us! God our FATHER not only knows WHAT we need, He CARES for us so much that He DESIRES to provide for our needs.
Because God,my FATHER loves me, I can truly TRUST Him for not only my life and wellbeing but also for my little family of four!
Now the timing may not always be when I want but I know in whom I have believed and know He is faithful to complete EVERYTHING He begins in my life. His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts.
Thank you God for Hope! Thank you for providing for our family!
“We wait in hope for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you.” Ps 33:20-22
